  • Agro-Industry + Industrial Microbiology  (Double Degree: AU & KMITL)

The food and agricultural industry is the world’s largest industry. The multi-billion dollar industry employs thousands of food and agricultural graduates each year. The food products found on the grocery shelves, are all designed by food scientists! And many innovations were discovered by agro-industrial scientists. Graduates are employed by food, agro and related industries, federal and state governments, and universities to work at the interface between the production and delivery of food and agricultural products. There are more positions available for qualified food and agro-industrial scientists in the industry and governmental agencies awaiting graduates to fill them.

Students in Biotechnology undergraduate program at Assumption University benefit from a committed faculty, small classes, and an emphasis on teamwork and shared responsibility for learning. The undergraduate programs in our Food Technology and Agro-Industry are designed to accommodate students with a variety of interests and career goals.

Food Technology

Do you like to eat? Are you interested in an exciting and challenging career that offers opportunities for professional advancement, travel, and the satisfaction of making a difference in achieving a healthy diet for people everywhere? Do you like to contribute to the world than take? Do you like science? If all the answers are yes, then a major in Food Technology may be exactly what you are looking for!

Have you ever wondered about the processes it takes to transform raw commodities to the food on your table? That’s what Food Technology is all about. Food Technology is a multi-disciplinary science that applies chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and nutrition to develop new food products and design new processes to improve the safety and quality of foods. Food scientists solve problems related to the production, preservation, processing, distribution, evaluation, safety, and utilization of food. Food scientists develop new foods, add value to raw food commodities and improve the quality and safety of existing food products. They also develop new, safer and more efficient production and processing technologies, and find ways to insure a safe, nutritious and economical food supply. Food Technology is science!

Agro-Industry

Agro-biotechnology is a range of tools, including traditional breeding techniques that alter living organisms, or parts of organisms, to make or modify products; improve plants or animals; or develop microorganisms for specific agricultural uses. Modern biotechnology today includes the tools of genetic engineering. Increasing yield potential and desirable traits in plant and animal food products has long been a goal of agricultural science. That is still the goal of agricultural biotechnology, which can be an important tool in reducing hunger and feeding the planet’s expanding and longer-living population, while reducing the adverse environmental effects of farming practices.

Business Japanese

Background: The Department of Business Japanese was established in November 1988. The program is designed to meet the needs of the business community and the socio-economic development of the nation.

Curriculum: To graduate with a Bachelor degree in Japanese, a student needs to complete at least 142 credits. Among these, 33 credits are from 11 Japanese major required courses and 9 credits from major elective courses.

Unlike Japanese programs offered in other Universities, our unique program aims to prepare students to work in the Japanese business community not only with a competent use of Japanese language, but also with a solid foundation in business knowledge, and a deep understanding of the customs, culture and background of Japan. Courses like Japanese for Secretaries, Japanese for Hotels, Japanese for Airline Services, Japanese for Tourism, are very popular among the students. According to feedback from our graduates, these courses are very useful in their work and seem to be a good answer to the present job opportunities.

At present we offer 20 different courses in 57 sections with approximately 1,300 students enrolled in each semester.

Strengths: We are proud to say that the Department of Business Japanese, Faculty of Arts, Assumption University is one of the best-recognized Japanese language departments within the Japanese community inside as well as outside the country. Our students’ performance is also a credit to Assumption University. In the past years, many students received Japanese Government scholarships, including the Monbusho Scholarship, Nikkensei Scholarship, Study Tour Award for outstanding Japanese language students, and more. In August 1988 and in the year 2000, 4 students won the first and second prizes in the 25th and the 27th Japanese Speech Contest organized by the Japan Old Student Association and the Embassy of Japan.

On the career opportunities, each year questionnaires are given out to the students during the commencement rehearsal. From these questionnaire results, almost all the graduates were given positions in various companies with very attractive starting salaries. From 51 graduates, 12 work in Japanese firms, 18 work in business-related firms, 3 work in airline services, 2 work as teachers, 2 are furthering their studies in Japan, and 4 help out in their family business. In the midst of the country’s economic crisis, this is more than satisfactory.

The strongest point of our department is its tremendously vibrant teaching team. We are said to have the largest number of native Japanese speakers of all Japanese teaching institutes in Thailand. Among 11 full-time instructors, there are 7 native Japanese one Myanmar, and 3 Thais. Three qualified par-time instructors enhance the strength of the team. Students can be sure that they are in good hands. They will also enjoy students’ life at our gorgeous Suvarnabhumi Campus, a so-called “University in the Park”. They will also have a culture touch in many cultural activities organized by the Department i.e. Business Japanese Day, Japanese Speech Contest, Home-Stay Program in Japan, Summer Classes in Japan, 3- month Intensive Japanese at the University of Sacred Heart, Tokyo, Japan, Student Exchange Program with Ryokoku Unviersity, Kyoto, Japan and more.

Chinese for Economy and Trade (Double Degree Program)

Chinese for Economy and Trade is a new Bachelor of Arts Program offered for Academic Year 2008.  This is a Joint Program by Assumption University and Beijing Language and Culture University.

Due to rapid economic growth in China in the last decade, bilateral trade and investments between Thailand and China have been increasing at an equally fast speed.  As a result, the needs for Chinese-language literate personnel by the business sectors have been on a constant rise.  In order to respond to the shortage in personnel with Chinese proficiency, Assumption University (AU) and Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) jointly founded a program in Chinese for Economy and Trade to produce qualified graduates to take up the positions in the business sectors.

Assumption University and Beijing Language and Culture University signed an agreement on October 16, 2003 to develop a joint-program: Bachelor of Arts in Chinese for Economy and Trade in Thailand.  The Program is designed for students who need to master the Chinese language for conducting businesses with Chinese-speaking nations.  The curriculum was jointly developed by AU and BLCU.  A degree from both Assumption Universities and BLCU will be conferred to students who fulfill the graduation requirements.

The objectives of the Program aim to enable its graduates to be proficient in Chinese language for economy and trade, and able to communicate with native speakers of Chinese fluently, be able to use Chinese language to conduct businesses with Chinese communities or work for organizations in Chinese speaking environment, and   understand various aspects of Chinese culture and know how to apply them appropriately.

Chinese for Economy and Trade is a four-year program, comprising 135 credits. Among them are 30 credits in General Education Courses which consist of 15 credits in English. The rest of courses are Chinese courses jointly developed by Assumption University and Beijing Language and Culture University and will be taught by teachers from both universities.

Mechatronics emphasizes the necessity of integration and interaction among different branches of engineering. Mechatronics philosophy challenges traditional engineering thinking and practices because the integrated approach in the selection of means to the contemplated functional ends must involve a team activity and crossing boundaries between conventional engineering disciplines.

Mechatronics Engineering is one of the newest branches of Engineering with far reaching applications to every sector of the society. The mechatronics engineering program provides a broad-based education in the basic principles of electrical, mechanical, control and computer engineering. In view of the requirement of engineers with this specialization in Thailand, Assumption University is offering a Bachelor of Engineering Degree program in Mechatronic Engineering at the School of Engineering.
